If you look closely you'll see two redbirds, the male and the female. The Cardinal is the state bird of West Virginia.
The snow is gentle right now, but the residents, like many people across the United States, made a trip to the store to get milk and bread. The supermarket shelves empty when the weather channel issues a severe snow storm warning. This happens often in the hills of West Virginia.
Carolyn, Lavina and their guests don't have as much to worry about when the electric goes out. The big house is heated by natural gas and there are enough oil lamps and candles to provide light. The snow will provide a temporary refrigerator and there are no TV's (except for the small one in Carolyn's room) to be missed.
Homemade biscuits are almost as good cold as they are hot and the guests love them during any time of the day.
